Family: I will never forgive you for yourbetrayal Around the time of her eighth birthday, Lydia’s parents split up. It came as quite a shock to her, for she had never seen her parents truly argue (though she supposed one of the main problems was that she never really saw her parents talking to one another). The divorce was brutal, and forced a wide separation in the family. Their properties were divided, leaving Clarrisa the summer home in East Hampton, and Laurence (who was the freer-spirit of the pair) his cherished winter abode in Woodstock, New York. The divorce was so vile, that Clarrisa vowed never to lay eyes upon Laurence again. She shut him out of all of their social circles, and stuck him on a blacklist. She kept their extravagant Upper East Side apartment, and forced Laurence to move to a cheaper neighborhood— Greenwich Village. Lydia’s parents divorce split up more than just property, it split up the family as well. Clarrisa decided that it was best to divide their familiar assets (or children, as more affectionate parents might call them) too. She decided to take Lydia, and left Laurence to raise Clark.
If there was one person that Lydia despised more than any other thing on the planet, it was her father. Her father was sloppy, lazy, disorganized, he had cheated, and gotten himself locked in prison—the ultimate social disgrace. She blamed him for her parents divorce, as well as many other childhood aliments that she hadn’t yet gotten over. Clark was almost as bad as her father. He was lazy, lacked ambition, and didn’t care about making himself presentable to the world. He was her opposite, and she loathed him. However, the real reason she hated him, though she would never admit it, even to herself, was that he had left to go live with her father. Clark, who had always been her comrade when it came to enduring tutoring or awful nannies, had chosen to abandon her. He had left Lydia with their inattentive mother to go live a life of slobbery in a different zip code, and for that she could never forgive him. . . . Laurence (father) . . .
